Gaseneta - Sooner Or Later (Late 70s?)

The only release from noisy psychadelic garage-punk band Gaseneta, who came from the "Minor scene" as it was called. They never had any releases at the time, and this is a compilation released in 1991 of old recordings.

"Gaseneta's Sooner or Later CD on the PSF label from 1978 featured Hamano Jun, Osato Toshiharo, and insane vocalist Yamazaki Harumi, had the guitar rampage factor of High Rise, but it's the slobbering speed freak aspect and damaged lo-fi air (a nod to Les Rallizes Denudes) that transformed this band into quite a unique thing"

GAUZE! One of the best bands in Japanese Hardcore Punk, a band with an unbelievably good reputation and they are still together!

The tracks here are taken from a comp called City Rockers released in 1982, and it was the first stuff Gauze ever recorded. Oddly, I hear the other bands on this comp were crappy new-wave outfits. As this is the earliest stuff Gauze put out, it is quite a bit different to the rest of their releases. What you hear here is a more primitive, traditional form of hardcore punk, more similar to early Discharge or Stalin than their frantic later output.

Here is something for G.I.S.M. fans. While most of the tracks on this are from comps, there are also some unreleased good quality live tracks that will be of interest. These include a performance of a M.A.N. song, and a 1992 performance of Death Exclamations that took place on the 6th hour, of the 6th day, of the 6th month!

Here is what the guy behind the globaldarkness G.I.S.M. site has to say about this bootleg.

"Without a single doubt the best Gism bootleg ever made. Combines all compilations tracks with listenable unreleased live stuff and come in great packaging, cool sleeve and 8 page booklet with full release info, sleeves, reviews etc. Amazing amount off effort has gone into this. Masturbation - Discography CD (ADK)

Another one of the ADK discography cds released by OK Records. This one collects all the stuff Masturbation ever put out.

I listened to it quite recently thinking it was an LP of the band, I can't remember much except for the fact that I enjoyed it!

Has a sleazy hard-edged punk sound, which I found very appealing. Also fans of other ADK releases will instantly recognize the famous Tam "Hard Punk" production.

Unfortunately I know hardly anything about this band, But I heard somewhere that the bassist went on to play for Kikeiji.

I also read in an issue of MRR that the band were exibitionists, this could be referring to their live show though, I read on a Japanese site that the singer would do such things as cutting himself open at gigs, Which sounds like Iggy Pop or Sid Vicious. Maybe the singer would even live up to the band's name and have a wank on stage? Wouldn't be suprised.

In fact, this album kind of reminds me of The Stooges. Especially the riff on track 4. An influence? Probably, who knows?

Good band.

Anarchy - S/T (1980)

Sorry about the lack of updates, haven't had much access to the computer due to my arsehole of a brother, and I have been quite busy with some other things, this should change soon though. Dirk was planning on uploading this, so here it is.

Despite this band seemingly being quite popular, I don't have much info sorry. I know that they called the band Anarchy because of Anarchy In The UK, and at concerts they and the fans would wear the workers uniforms that the singers father used to wear. The band also had anti-imperialistic lyrics at concerts, but had to change them if they wanted the songs to get on record.

If I am being completely honest, and this may get me into trouble, I am not a fan of this band. They seem to be one of those wannabe british/sex pistols Japanese punk bands, like Star Club. And this album mainly consists of bad covers of good songs by The Clash, Stiff Little Fingers, and so on. Also I won't bother going into the tantrum they threw when they weren't included in the film Burst City, they even started a childish feud with The Stalin over it.

But I know some of you like this band, or may like this band. So have fun!

The third issue is from when the magazine got taken over by Sakevi and became the strange, arty "Performance Of War".

If you have been reading Dirk's other site Cities On Flame With Rock And Roll you will be aware that he sadly passed away on Wednesday.

He had been in and out of hospital for a while, and during his 7th Chemo the doctors discovered a massive tumor in his left lung. Tragically there was nothing they could do for him.

Its very sad that this happened to such a good, kind guy at only 19 years old.

Its amazing how he kept positive, and kept providing music on his sites through it all, he will be truly missed.

At his request I will be continuing Fight Against The Plutocrats.

Rest In Peace, Dirk.

The Screamers were a punk rock group active in the Los Angeles, California area in the late 1970s.

Included among the first wave of LA's punk rockers, the label "techno-punk" was applied to the band by the Los Angeles Times in 1978. The Screamers are widely cited as the pioneers of a genre now known as "synthpunk," and might also be classifeid as art punk. The Screamers were notable for their unusual instrumentation, featuring electric piano and synthesizer, while omitting guitars. Additional musicians, including violinists and a female vocalist, were occasionally incorporated into their performances.

The group featured a highly developed theatrical presentation that centered around a manic lead vocalist, Tomata du Plenty, whose stage persona one early commentator described as "a psychotic Mickey Rooney."

Though they developed a substantial following and generated considerable press coverage, the Screamers never released a record. In the Don Letts-directed documentary Punk: Attitude (2005) singer Jello Biafra of Dead Kennedys cited the Screamers as a key influence on his group, and as one of the great unrecorded groups in rock history, sentiment echoed by Brendan Mullen, who ran the punk club The Masque.

Here is some more ADK stuff for you, This time G-Zet. I believe this CD was released by OK Records and contains everything G-Zet ever recorded, Also between songs there are snippets from an interview with Tam, In Japanese of course.

G-Zet was a band formed by ADK Boss and Ex-The Stalin guitarist Tam. He played guitar and quite a few of their songs were instrumentals. They did have various vocalists on some tracks and at gigs, including a female vocalist.

I heard they later changed their name to Bradbury, and while they were on tour Tam famously went missing. It is believed he went into hiding because of debts he owed, but nobody is too sure. Some said he was killed by Yakuza and his corpse thrown into a volcano, but that sounds ridiculous. Michiro Endo told my friend that Tam died of a drug overdose, But recently there has apparently been some sightings of Tam by Japanese punk fans. will we ever know the truth?

If you ask me, Under the Ashes may very well be the flagship record of this current crust revival. Unlike World Burns to Death who throw in some Japanese influences in places and Disclose who are so faithful to the Discharge aesthetic to at times border on parody, Framtid's music is straight up crust punk done EXACTLY like it should be done. In a word, it is definitive, from the distorted guitars to the driving d-beat rhythms to the homogenous song structures to the black and white, cut-and-paste artwork.

G.I.S.M.--Live Tokyo 1982-1983

A Review i found:
Side one's April 1982 gig is, of course, unspeakably raw and noisy, but the vocals are relatively clear, the drums audible and the guitars provide a steady churn of barely-structured rushing thrash and feedback that, while nowhere near so sophisticated or metallic as the band would become when late guitarist Randy Uchida joined soon after, is powerful and anguished. Recorded just five or six months after their November '81 debut and five months before the set partially captured on the seminal "Outsider" comp LP, it's probably a bit foolish to make any firm assessments of influence and inspiration based on such rough recordings, but I would nonetheless be surprised if the band weren't listening to an awful lot of very early UK hardcore at this stage. The speed and snarled vocals are much more suggestive of Discharge, Disorder and Chaos UK than of traditional '70's punk or even the better-known contemporary American hardcore, and the likelihood of likeminded Finnish, Swedish or Italian bands being widely heard in Japan at this stage seems slim (feel free to correct me if you know otherwise, because the possibilities are intriguing).
The second side was recorded some time in 1983, and the sound is marginally better (similar to the much-maligned live material on Negative Approach's "Total Recall", which I think sounds great). The sound has already progressed considerably, with the songs generally tighter and faster, and most importantly, Uchida's guitar thrashing out the serious riffing and wild leadwork that would soon become Japcore's defining components. It's less historically important than the first set, perhaps, but it's a great listen if you're a GISM freak and probably completely unlistenable to just about anyone else...consider yourself warned.

"A female punk rock group made of four girls. The name of the band "KYAH" is the sound of woman's screaming voice. They look cute but the sound was rash, straight and hard-cored."

Seems to be very very little information on this band.
But I do know they swapped members with another girl punk band called RAP before they released their Dear Mr mini LP, So it has a different singer and a different sound to the other releases.

And by the way, Members of Lip Cream and Laughin Nose are credited as guest chorus on the slapdash EP.

GISM (also G.I.S.M.) was a Japanese hardcore punk band (with strong metal leanings) formed in Japan in 1981. It was composed of vocalist Sakevi Yokoyama(real name Shigehisa. "Sakevi" being a corrupted "sakebi" - a shout, or scream of "MURDER!"), guitarist Randy Uchida, bassist Kannon(sometimes known as "Cloudy", later replaced by Kiichi Takahashi in the 90's), and drummer Monamour Hiroshima(replaced by Ironfist Tatsushima around the same time Kannon threw in the towel). GISM often used heavy metal style guitar solos and riffs, while at the same time drawing much influence from the early industrial/avant-garde music scene...something extremely uncommon in punk bands at that time.

GISM was widely known for the extreme violence present in their lyrics, and live shows. Sakevi would often march about the stage clad in a balaclava and covered with bullets, waving lit flares in audience members faces, throwing microphone stands, rocks, and attacking concert goers as Vietnam War footage was projected behind him. Onstage he would go as far as to attack photographers who took pictures of him and chase audiences with a flamethrower.

GISM has attained a cult status in the hardcore punk scene, probably due to their violent attitude and bizarre artworks/performances,coupled with the legends surrounding them.

The acronym GISM has never had a constant meaning attached to it. Variations include God In The Schizoid Mind, Guerilla Incendiary Sabotage Mutineer, General Imperialism Social Murder and Gnostic Idiosyncracy Sonic Militant.

Randy Uchida passed on in Feb 10th 2001 due to cancer, Sakevi continued to contribute his unique brand stlTH® of collage art to the world, and started his own line of t-shirts. Ironfist Tatushima went on to play in the bands Die You Bastard! and Crow which he had been playing with before he joined G.I.S.M.

Hardest. Band. Ever.--------- Nightmare...Burning Spirt style Japanese H.C. (not be confused with the lame ass Visual band 'Nightmare') absolutley blows my mind. Never before have i heard a band play this fast, be this intense, or make me want to brake stuff as much as they do. If Toxic Narcotic and Death Side had a baby....it would probably be Nightmare. 'Give Notice of Nightmare' is quite possibly the Hardest, Fastest, Most INSANE album of it's time (it came out in 1989..and it still out does most modern H.C.). Songs like 'Actuality', 'Black Widow', Self Defence Power', etc. are all great pieces of BRUTAL Japanese Hard Core. Any fan of the genre should check Nightmare out for suuuure

On January 21, 1979 a group of Japanese bands reportedly got together to record an independent album called Tokyo New Wave ‘79.

On May 11, 1979 another group of Japanese bands held a series of live performances, in Shinjuku: a ward of Tokyo. The recording of these performances was released as Live Tokyo Rockers ‘79.

Other than that, I don’t know much else about the two albums.

Almost complete discography of this great mid to late 80's

This is some of the stranger music from the 80's - a band that really goes all over the place over the course of their career. The liner notes don't say where the different records start and start, but you can pretty much figure it out from the different qualities of recording. The earliest stuff (the first three songs) is kind of schizophrenic and thinly recorded. For example, the first song is in this epic crossover style, and then the second song could be described as "silly" almost like a children's ditty. The stuff on the My Meat's Your Poison compilation is faster and thicker, with more of a hardcore feel. The music here reminds me of GAUZE, especially the vocals. Their next recording is even faster, a bit murkier, and maybe has a little of the crossover style returning- the guitar solos especially remind one of Cause for Alarm-era AGNOSTIC FRONT. Beginning with the song "Void," they slow down a bit and have a bit more groove to the riffs, and the songs are longer. You could say it bears a resemblance to KURO's Fire EP, although it is not d-beat. Overall this is definitely unique and almost always compelling hardcore, even though the horrible production and frequent stylistic departures can be jarring over the course of the CD.

They started in ‘82 or ‘83. I would describe the music as hard-edged, energetic goth rock with some leftover punk touches.

The drummer was Yoshida, who would go on to do better, noisier things w/YBO2 and later found Ruins and a million other bands of varying quality. Phaidia’s guitarist was Kawamoto, who also played in YBO2 and in the original Ruins lineup

Not a lot is known about Confuse except they are the most widely bootlegged Japanese band, I think even outpacing GISM for the number of boots.

The first recordings of Confuse appear to be the stuff on the Spending Loud Night 7" (King's World Records). These recordings are ultraraw noisy thrash and are possibly from a demotape, but I haven't run across a trader that had this demo, although I have heard it was... This stuff is from 1983 and I think is a 4-track basement demo type of thing. The Indignation demo from 1984 is definitly a demo tape, I have seen two covers for this tape. More controlled noise but still outrageously fuzzed out and violent sounding. Later this year Confuse entered the studio for what I believe was the first time and produced the Nuclear Addicts flexi. This, as with the progression from the 1st demo to the 2nd demo, shows a less chaotic and more focused attack, but if you had never heard the demos and just this you'd be hard pressed to believe it. The flexi is a classic noisecore record, abrasive rough buzzsaw thrash a la Disorder but heavier. After this, Confuse appear on a compilation 8" called Jisatsu Omnibus and the three songs are a bit more rough sounding than Nuclear Addicts (some of them are rerecordings of older songs from the demos as well).

Star Club, wow…most people slag this band as nothing but a 2-Bit, Japanese Sex Pistols knock-off. Their image & visual style is no argument against this opinion, but it is NOT AT ALL accurate for their musical style!

originally formed in the city of Nagoya sometime in 1977, they have the dubious distinction of being the FIRST Japanese punk band, ever. one could definately dispute this statement, but whatever…thats what the history books claim.

the folowing posts are an effort to not only dispell the BS reputation they have as a garbage Pistols rip-off, but a tribute to one of the longest running & still active bands in the history of punk rock. these records will keep to the years of 1977-1984; when they were doing their best stuff EVER!!

endnote- there are almost 100 different STAR CLUB releases that have been available over the years, and they are STILL very active as a band to this day. at various points in time, there have been members of GISM, KIKEIJI, STALIN, THE POGO, etc…that have been somewhat involved with this band. some real legendary hard-hitters of Japanese punk!!

another interesting note is that in 1987, they did a full-scale tour through Australia & New Zealand; something only previously done by the Dead Kennedys.

only downside is the somewhat weak production

First off yes what you've heard is true , the production on the New Nightmare album is weak. The guitar is twangy and without a doubt the production hurts this album. If you are expecting the old Nightmare you may be further disappointed as their sound is a bit different now. The news isnt all bad though. Gone is the "perpy" sounding sax as Nightmare is back to the classic Guitar , Bass and drums lineup. The sound has changed a bit yet one thing that has'nt change is this band still has POWER. If ive given the impression I dont like this album that is wrong , I actually enjoy it quite a bit. The songs are great and the old power of Nightmare is still there. I dont mind the new direction at all but I could definitely do without the odd production.

this band grew out of japanese psych band 3/3
they formed in '78 and where one of the first japanese punk bands.

They returned to Japan in 1978 to start a new group which became very famous: Friction. In 1979 Friction appeared on a compilation and in 1980 they recorded their first album. Friction released more than 10 albums in Japan. Friction has certainly a heavy influence on the late 1970's Japanese punk and new wave scene. Reck is again active on the Tokyo scene and has teamed up with Haino Keiji and hardcore drummer Pill, with whom he performs under the name Head Rush. This album of 3/3 is the rarest underground album ever released in Japan.

Friction was the trio of: Reck, Tsunematsu Masatoshi & Chico Hige. Bassist Reck had resided in NYC in the late '70s and played with James Chance and the Contortions as well as Lydia Lunch in the No Wave heyday. Friction was the band he formed upon returning to Japan in 1978. The band continued to exist for the better part of two decades and eventually issued a domestic album on Tzadik in 1999 (Zone Tripper), but this heavily charged debut (aggressive rock/punk, informed by No Wave and Japanese noir aesthetics) was their defining moment. Considered the most legendary underground Japanese group of the time (their albums were at least barely available in the US, unlike the earliest efforts from Keiji Haino or the Alchemy label), now reissued for the second time in equally definitive fashion.

To some extent THE BONES are a relatively obscure band since they never got as prominent as for example GISM or KURO, but for sure that doesn’t mean they were bad at all cuz the contrary is absolutely true. Unlike the aforementioned masters of disaster, THE BONES never played that style of stuff we call "GiKu-core" today ("GIsm/KUro"… I should try to cash in for inventing an awesome explanation like this, shouldn’t I?), but their snotty as fuck, strong and ultimately rocking, catchy, hardcore-y punkrock which is dished up at uptempo speeds and contains hoarse, shouting vocals equals a kick in the bones (yo, again I managed to bring up a cool play with words…). To what I know, this EP is THE BONES’ one and only donation to the punk community, but at least one track of this pearl ("Insanity") was bootlegged on the "Nagasaki nightrider" comp. LP (1998 / 500 made / the other bands include LIP CREAM, STALIN, LAUGHIN’ NOSE, OUTO, THE CLAY, COBRA, MASTURBATION, KURO, SWANKYS, ABURADAKO, COMES, L.S.D., KIKEIJI, SYSTEMATIC DEATH, BITOUSHA, EXECUTE, SA, ROSE ROSE, G-ZET and LIP CREAM). Nonetheless, despite the fact that I’m still curious if THE BONES got their name because of Bones of DISCHARGE’s and/or BROKEN BONES’ fame, I bet my girlfriend as well as my best friend Steffie will love this 7" for the sole reason that the inner print shows four guys’ naked butts (ugh, there’s even one with a cigarette stuck into the hole of a person’s universe…), but to me, this is just amazing shit in the vein of a way more harmonious LSD or ZOUO mixed up with some classic, lesser metallic GISM influences, so I cannot recommend this puppy, which doesn’t contain any lyrics, but should come with a sticker, enough!!

The Stalin began in 1980 and blew away all previous attempts at Japanese punk rock(The Star Club ect..) with their radical, evolving style. The band was founded by Michiro Endo, a 32 year-old socialist activist, Vietnam veteran, and street singer who had spent time in the West. He chose the name because "the name Stalin is very hated by most people in Japan, so it is very good for our image." Because he was a socialist, he also explained the name as meaning "the downside of every good idea." Michiro was also the editor of INGO fanzine, which helped release the second press of Stalin's first flexi Dendou Kokeshi in 1980. The cover of this EP was a brutal drawing of a penis being injected by a hypodermic needle. The two songs on the flexi were great raw, jangly punk rock tunes. This sound continued on their second EP, 1981's 5-song Stalinism 7", on which at least one Ramones riff can be heard within the unique Stalin sound. Not impressed with crowd reactions at Stalin shows, Michiro behaved like a madman, leaving a wake of destruction everywhere he went. He would spit, pull hair, or just beat up members of the audience. If that didn't work, he would leave the stage after one song. A MRR scene report from the time describes fish heads and human shit on stage. The Stalin were quickly banned from most venues.

The band's major label debut was 1982's Stop Jap LP, which many regard as their best work. The two singles from the record found them reinventing songs by the Doors and Stooges as B-sides. The lyrics from this album supposedly reflect a more anti-nationalist, anarchistic slant on political issues. The band reached their peak in popularity with the next two hardcore records in 1983: the 4-song Go Go Stalin 12" and the Mushi LP. The Stalin was one of the first Japanese bands to reach an international audience when their song "Chicken Farm" appeared on MRR's(Maximum Rock And Roll)

Bastard was a Japanese hardcore punk band from Tokyo. Bastard was around in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bastard put out an EP, and an LP. Both were then compiled into a Discography. They were Featured on several compilation albums. The lineup consisted of:

Tokurow - Vocals
Fuji - Guitar
Lizawa - Bass
Koba - Drums

On the LP Fuji was replaced by Zigyaku. After Bastard's disbandment members went on to play in other bands such as Judgement, Forward and Buzzy Yamato-Cho Band.

aburadako have been around for a long while [they first formed in 1983], and still, i have difficulty in finding info about them – talk about being true to your underground roots! either way, they're worth checking out! i don't think everyone will like aburadako, they are definitely a brand apart, but you got nothing to lose and, in the worst possible scenario, all you might get is a fulminating headache hammering its way from your ears into your brain.

the first thing that you will definitely notice when listening to them is the vocalists voice. that'll either hook you up or turn you off! he's got a style that's very unique. personally i love the wacky style of singing, it's a very straightforward and honest way and it's what punk should be, loud and gritty!
the second thing you'll notice will probably be the drumming, which i think is tops! the guitar parts are also good and the bassline has its high moments

all of aburadako's albums are self-titled, meaning, they are all named 'aburadako'.
aburadako's lyrics are supposed to be either really deep, in the spiritual sense, or deep in their 'thickness' [read 'pseudo-intellectual, lots of nasty words to confuse you'] – as any self-respecting punk-driven band, their songs deal a lot with empty urban life, angsty disillusion and repressed revolt. or so i've heard :D
their drummer was supposedly in 15 bands, appart from aburadako(Ruins ect..)

Fans of true underground Japanese hardcore should pay attention to MATSUJI since this quartet totally rocks the little ghettos we’re living in! Armed with everything (!!) an awe-inspiring band from the land of the rising sun has to offer, MATSUJI’s incredibly powerful, mid tempo to quickly offered, solid rocking hardcore that contains an amazingly raw, yet memorable singer, certainly stood the test of time because otherwise – you can be sure! – I wouldn’t mention them within this small amout of space!! Yep, this platter, which doesn’t include a lyric sheet, inserts or other crap, is something I would consider as "essential", but at the moment, due to the genius of MATSUJI, by hook or by crook, I’m at a loss for words… Stop! One thing before I’ll totally lose the last drop of my brainpower: Does anyone know if MATSUJI released other material beside of this astonishing EP, their 3 tracks on the "Nobody’s fault - Sulais omnibus vol. 1" comp. LP (Slice Records / 1987 / the other troops are ROSE ROSE, CRISIS KILL, POISON ARTS, CLOD and NIRA KODOMO), the 5 songs on the "Attack of 4 tribes" comp. LP (Selfish Records / 1988 / further gangs are 666, POISON ARTS, F.O.A.D.) as well as their 3 slits on the "Slice selection" comp. CD (Slice Records / 1990 (?) / next to MATSUJI, this sampler features GHOUL, DEATH SIDE, ROSE ROSE and POISON ARTS)??

The Comes from Tokyo were one of the first Japanese hardcore bands and their eleven song 12" entitled No Side is one of the best early punk records. The band first appeared on the Outsider compilation LP in 1982 along with such seminal Japanese outfits as GISM, Gauze, and Laughin Nose. No Side came out in 1984. The music was fast, rocking hardcore with melodic guitar and a totally insane woman on lead vocals. The songs on this LP combine these hell-shriek vocals, massive hooks, and the stop-start hardcore of Minor Threat, but Comes had a screeching, spastic energy unlike anything in the US. Their follow up LP, 1986's Power Never Die, is apparently a bad metal record. Too bad, but at least some members went on to be in the mighty Lip Cream and are probably still in some band or another. At least two bootleg singles have been put out, mostly recycling the No Side material, and the one to get is the split LP that combines No Side with GISM's Detestation LP (which, even in its bizarre glory, I think pales in comparison). Getting these two classics on one record is too good be true. No Side has also been booted onto CD recently.

Excelent compilation of japanese punk from '83
but punk allready came to japan in 1977

The records that contains what is arguably the best Gism track: Death Exclamations. An aggression laden outburst with feverish nasty mastering and SKV at his dirtiest. There are some Japanes linerotes for Gism in the inserts. GPH is actually 'Rebel Street Part II'. The original 'Rebel Street' comp-lp came out in 1982 on Japan Record/Giraffe and features new-wave, no-wave and vaguely punkish bands like E.D.P.S, Lizard, Shampoo and a bunch of others.
